Ministry of Power and Energy of the Government of Sri Lanka is the ministry tasked with the implementation of the government policies related to Electricity and Energy Sectors.

Aimed at creating a phenomenal growth in the energy sector Ministry of Power and Energy is geared to reach 100% electrification by the end of 2012. While striving to make the power generation process more environment- friendly the ministry has made successful moves to cut down the heavy losses incurred over the years. In fact for the first time in 12 years the month of June, 2010 saw the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) recording profits.

Development of renewable energy is going to be a key cause of the ministry and the long term power generation plans have incorporation of renewable energy with active participation of the private sector, as a key component. Exploring the possibility of the use of nuclear energy too is among the agendas of the ministry and the Atomic Energy Authority of Sri Lanka is currently conducting a Pre-feasibility study aimed at developing nuclear energy as an option.
