“In line with the new government’s energy policy and program, the government expects to earn an immense amount of foreign exchange for the country from the oil tank complex in Trincomalee. To this effect, Lanka IOC will be working together with the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation. These efforts will be implemented in future through the already established joint venture between India and Sri Lanka for this purpose, Trinco Petroleum Terminal Ltd.
Even though these tanks were built during the British colonial period, they’re still in really good condition. Steps will be taken to do minor renovations, construct a pipeline to supply fuel to ships and develop it as a storage for port development together with the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation ensuring the country gets the benefits out of it”, commented Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody during a site visit to the Trincomalee Oil Tank Complex.
Deputy Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation Ruwan Janitha Kodithuwakku, who joined the visit, said that both ministries are working together to come up with a plan to take the maximum benefit of out of the Trincomalee Harbour, which is known as the fifth largest natural port in the world, more effectively for the national economy. He added that that as part of this mission to turn Sri Lanka into a maritime hub, government will present the national plan to enter the oil market and execute port development plan in line with the oil farm development project within the next few months.
They conducted site visits at the Trincomalee Harbour, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, which owns the oil tank premises, the Trinco Petroleum Terminal Ltd and the Lanka IOC. Along with ministers mentioned above, the Chairman of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, Mr. D.J.A.S. De S. Rajakaruna, the Managing Director of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation, Dr. Mayura Netthikumarage, the Chairman of the Ports Authority, Admiral (Retd) Mr. Sirimevan Ranasinghe and other executive officers also participated in the site visit.
