Hon. Dullas Alahapperuma advised the parties concerned to activate power generation of Kelanithissa Combined Cycle Power Plant that has been inactive from October 2019 within the next few weeks and expedite the process of adding 165 MW of power daily to the national grid
The Minister expressed these views yesterday (15) at an observation visit to examine the present status of the Kelanitissa Power Plant.
The parts of the power plant which subjected to a mechanical failure has been sent to India for repairs and it was unable to get them repaired and returned due to world wide Covid 19 epidemic. Hon. Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said that measures will be take to discuss with the government of India get them repaired and returned as early as possible.
Further, the Minister said that a long term plan should be designed to minimize faults caused due to the traditional procedures and to repair the power plants when mechanical faults occur time to time. He said that since readiness is appropriate before risk, it is important to maintain power plants such as Kelanitissa active without defects for equilibrium of the national grid.
The Minister in charge Mr. Alahapperuma stressed that contribution of green and renewable energy should be increased up to 70% as per the “Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour” of HE the President and should be committed to fulfil the task of directing the power sector to achieve this target.
