Hon. Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister of Passenger Transport Management and Power & Energy informed that CEB, PUCSL and Renewable Energy Authority should get together when taking decisions on the proposed electricity projects to be commenced this year and in the years to come in our country.
A discussion on this matter was held last evening (23) in the Ministry of Petroleum and the Minister said that the errors in the Electricity Act will be amended and will make the background to expedite the commencement of electricity projects.
Stage 3 of Norochcholai coal power plant and Kerawalapitiya LNG power plant are to be commenced this year. These to power plants contributes the national grid by 600 Mw. So, the Minister informed to commence the constructions of Norochcholai power plant first.
As a result of not taking measures to operate at least one power plant during the year under review , supply of power as per the requirement has become a challenge for CEB. It was decided to pay attention on adding extra electricity to the national grid utilizing renewable energy resources as much as possible and to commence the already identified and approved renewable electricity projects with immediate effect.
The Minister emphasized not to be restricted to the sections of the National Electricity Act and informed the institutions not to take decisions individually and advised be together when taking decisions. The Minister requested to work considering as a national interest, even though there are criticisms. He added that legal assistance could be obtained through the government having informed Attorney General’s Department including the Attorney General.
The Minister said , the officers have reported him that delay in the construction of stage three of Norochcholai coal power plant has occurred a loss of Rs. 250 Mn. daily to the CEB and pointed out the huge losses faced by an apex body of the country .
On the request of the Hon. Minister, the officers of the three institutes agreed to take decisions together in future.
