Hon. Ravi Karunanayake

Minister of Power, Energy and Business Development

Hon. Ravi Karunanayake, Minister of Power, Energy and Business Development emphasizes that committed service of our youth is required for the country today. There are three important factors to strengthen our country. They are national security, national economy and the youth based economic structure. An independent country free of fear could be created by ensuring national economy. It will pave the way to influx of foreign investment to the country. Further, development of the country could be achieved by strengthening the national economy. We must not allow to trivialize the national economy.  What we gain today could be invested tomorrow. Our youth is our greatest resource. We should protect them and lead in the correct way. No need of politics for schools. Politics should be stopped by the school gate. Otherwise, education will be totally collapsed. At that time I was a subordinate  of Hon. Lalith Athulathmudali. That’s why we are investing as much as possible for education.

The Minister expressed these ideas participating at the ceremony   of opening a new building at the Prince College; Kotahena under the programme of developing selected schools islandwide under the concept of nearest school is the best school.

Hon. Minister Karunanayake added that

“Our Prime Minister Hon. Ranil Wickramasinghe initiated a drastic change in the education when he became the Minister of Education during 1978-79. Being against who are working is a salient feature of this country. Some may create a problems and sabotage works. The education system of the country was changed after around 15-20 years and gave a considerable place for education. When I came to power as the Minister of Education, only 1.8% of the Gross Domestic Product was allocated for education. We increased it up to 3.4%. We allocated 69000 crores only for development. Out of it 100 Mn to transform the nearest school to the best school. Our present Minister of Education is giving a yeoman service. This is how we are making a change. Education is an essential sector.

The economy was changed seemingly in 1977 – 1978. Then President   Mr. J.R.Jayawardena opened the country for the open economy. There is no discipline or commitment in our country. People have got used to get everything free. These issues emerge hen people are trying to fulfill endless needs using the limited income. This is what we have to change.

Further, a country cannot be developed in the absence of discipline. It is outstanding in our country. When people do not love the country and parents, such country will not have a bright future. This is the change we should make. On the other hand, the menace of drugs abuses the lives of our youth. Even though today’s society has been commercialized, parents should spend time on behalf of their children.  If not, children addict to these things without their knowledge and waste their lives. So, drug abuse must be eradicated.
