“ Consumer community has to over pay an amount around 15% – 20% since political decisions have not been properly made……”
“We will not stop Soorya Bala Sangramaya. A committee was appointed to look into its growth……”
“Come for a discussion with the engineers within a fortnight to solve the issues…..”
(Hon. Ravi Karunanayake, Minister of Power, Energy and Business Development emphasizes by fulfilling a promise made to the protestors who engaged in the protest on 26th July).
Hon. Ravi Karunanayake, Minister of Power, Energy and Business Development stated that “our innocent consumer community has to over pay an amount around 15% – 20% to the electricity bill since political decisions have not been properly made. Therefore, we have commenced a process of generating power under low costs obtaining the views of the engineers in order to prevent them from over paying. The least cost mode of power generation is hydro- power. The next lower costs could be afforded on generation of power through mini hydro-power plants, coal, L.N.G., renewable energy and petroleum etc. respectively.
Basically, I need to provide electricity without oppressing consumers. I am taking action to meet it. On one hand CEB has incurred a loss of Rs. 100 billion this year. If this Rs. 100 billion could have been used for the country’s development how nice it would be. As it does not happen, we have planned to buy electricity at a least price. We should protect the environment while supplying electricity to the consumers at a price bearable for them”.
He expressed these ideas at a meeting held at the Ministry held at the Ministry fulfilling the promise of giving an opportunity to meet the Minister made to the public at the protest of several environmental organizations held in front of the Ministry on 26th June. Representatives of several environmental organizations, Dr. B.M.S.Batagoda and some senior officials of the Ministry participated at this meeting.
At this meeting held with the participation of the representatives of several environmental organizations, the Minister in Charge made an explanation on the power and energy policy of the government, energy mix, energy security, diversification and process of generating power at a bearable price. The Minister further emphasized that a committee has been appointed to inspect the progress of Soorya Bala Sangramaya that has been implemented covering the entire island.
The Minister added that there is no truth in the allegation that the government is trying to terminate Soorya Bala Sangramaya being spread at the moment and the government will take suitable measures to promote electricity consumers considering the financial impact of the Net Plus, Net Metering and Net Accounting methods being implemented under this programme.
The Minister gave opportunity for the representatives of environmental organizations who participated this discussion to express their views and agreed to give an opportunity for a discussion with the engineers of CEB within a fortnight to give solutions for their issues.
