Ravi Karunanayaka
Minister of Power, Energy and Business Development

‘We have to use dendro-power. This is a very good energy source available with us. However, there are some practical issues. This is a strange subject for me. But, I am moving forward delightfully taking this challenge. There are many barriers and bottlenecks in this journey go by our team consist of my Secretary including me. Those barriers may be right or wrong. Nevertheless, we have to go for a right bold political solution at this juncture. This solution should have been taken 05 years ago because during 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, a single Mega Watt of power was not added into National Power Grid. However, demand for energy is increasing by 6%, 7%. With this, we have really faced problems. If we fail to take a right decision today we will happen to go on a gloomy journey. Bold decision not being taken by leaders is the major problem what we have today and usually what happen is only passing ball from one to another. The President, the Prime Minister including I need to take a bold decision. We are ready to face whatever political consequences. We have to make investment for future. We have to make such investment less in amount in a right manner’ Ravi Karunanayaka, Minister of Power, Energy and Business Development said.
The Minister said this while attending the inauguration ceremony of ‘Hero of Dendro Power – 2019 Competition’ held today (28) morning at the Office of the German Ambassador located in Colombo 03.  ‘An innovative renewable power project is to be selected through this competition and necessary facilities will be provided. Project proposals can be invited from both public and private sectors. This completion is organized and held by Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority’ Minister added.

Minister Ravi Karunanayaka further said,
‘In the first week after assuming my duty in the Ministry of Power, many youths accessed me and placed a request. Their request included to protect our mini power stations, do not allow anything new with bad impact, do not establish wind power stations because these have the impact on our bird species. If we think all these, a very limited task remains to do. A unit of electricity is generated at Rs.22.73 of cost, but the same unit of electricity is sold at Rs.16.32. We are suffering a loss through this. If we allow this thing to continue knowing it obviously, I feel that this is a big sin what we are doing. As politicians, we should not forget our duty and responsibility of safeguarding the future of our youths. We all get together and find out a way to develop our country. A tender is awarded only to one bidder among other bidders. Other bidders who are not awarded with tender make a criticism on the decision taken and putting a chain of questions regarding it. This is what usually happening. We have to change this type attitude from our mind. If we want to see our future becomes prosperous, we have to take a right bold decision how India, Bangladesh, Maldives and Pakistan did for their rapid development, then only we also can go on a successful journey what those countries travelled’.
