“There were several organized rumors in the media last week. First was the speculation of a fuel price hike. The rumor was spreaded as if the information was received from the officials of the petroleum corporation. The second was that there would be an impending fuel shortage. Responding to the media reports the minister said that people who are external to our ministry are saying that they would not allow increasing fuel prices. But we reaffirm that there would be no price hike or a shortage of fuel in the near future. People who are spreading these rumors are looking to create a panic among people and in the market. It is a serious crime. Therefore, I request media to be responsible in their reporting.” The minister of power and energy Mr. Patali Champika Ranawaka said in a media briefing on Monday (May 11th), replying to that false propaganda at the ministry of power and energy.
Minister further added,
“According to the 66th clause of the petroleum corporation act, only the minister is having authority to take decision regarding the increase or decrease the oil prices. Therefore the other people cannot get pricing decisions. We have not yet taken any decision to increase fuel prices. We have been given a concession to the people through oil price under the good governance of President Maithripala. We are not going to change it again.”
It is a debunking rumor that there is an attempt to sell off CEYPETCO. The corporation had earned a profit of 17 billion Rupees over the past 3 months and it will not make further losses in the future too. Another rumor that was spreading is that the petroleum corporation is making losses due to corruption. We are not accepting the charge that petroleum corporation is corrupted. Over the past 3 months we have established good governance in the corporation. And the inquiries about the corruptions allegations which had happened in the past are in progress. Therefore it is a deliberate lie that the corporation is corrupted. We are now rehabilitating and repairing the pipe lines that carry fuel with the local engineering expertise. We are now being able to save a large sum of money through it.
No any corruption or malpractice happened during the last 100 days. CEYPETCO underwent a very clean administration. We are maintaining the same good governance in the future too. Reduction of oil prices has made a positive effect on our economy. Even some people are spreading rumors on price hikes the President in his policy document had mentioned about a concession of 40 Billion Rupees for fuel. From the 26th of January the government has given 80 Billion Rupee concession with the patronage of the ministry of power and energy. We were able to save 15,000 Rupees per family by this. We are proud of being able to stimulate to the economy from our ministry. Our first target is to create a country that is self sufficient with energy. Therefore we are requesting the media not to publish erroneous reports such as price hikes and fuel shortages”. He said.
