87% Power Supply to be increased to 100% within next year.

With the sole intention of increasing the power supply island wide of 87% to 100% by 2012, Minister of Power and Energy Patali Champika Ranawaka  has launched a program Vidulamu Lanka parallel to Balaya Lanka.

Currently power supply island wide in 25 districts has progressed considerably. Under the farsighted leadership of Minister Ranawaka Electricity supply has reached 100% in Colombo, Gampaha, and Hambantota Districts. Meanwhile by the end of 2010 The Ministry of Power and Energy had provided electricity coverage to Kalutara 90%, Matara 96%, Galle 98%, Ratnapura 88%, Kegalle 79%, Monaragala 89%, Anuradhapura 73%, Polonnaruwa 84%, Vavunia 68%, Kilinochchi 10%, Jaffna 72%, Muleithiv 16%, Badulla 82%, Nuwara Eliya 86%, Kurunegala 86%, Trincomalee 57%, Puttlam 90%, Mannar 44%, Baticalore 55%, Kandy 91%, Amparei 68% and Matale 84%. The ministry further stated that excluding the districts of Kilinochchi and Muleitiv they have recorded a growth of over 50% in all other districts.

While the power and energy Ministry has planned to construct and complete Transmission cables for Kaluthara, Galle, Matara, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa Districts by 2011, they also anticipate the completion of Transmission cables for Puttlam, Kurunegala, Kandy, Matale, Nuwara Eliya, Badulla, Monaragala, Trincomalee, Batticalore, Amparei, Jaffna, Kilinochchi, Muleitiv, Mannar and Vavuniya by 2012. The Ministry had further planned several schemes within this year for people of other districts who have hitherto not received electricity.
