In keeping with the world in focusing on renewable energy sources in the next 15 years, Sri Lanka too will have to focus on these renuable energy sources, said the minister of power and energy Patali Champika Ranawaka addressing the International Green and sustainable energy conference in Rio. The main reason for the world facing the environmental crisis is the increased use of petroleum, coal and other fossil fuels. With the increased use of fossil fuels for developmental requirements which could have adverse implications on the entire human kind. The country is currently facing a severe crisis and both monsoons have failed plunging the country into a looming drought situation. This in turn has affected the country’s hydro power capacity forcing the authorities to depend more on thermal power to meet the country’s power requirement. Currently the hydro power capacity has dwindles to a mere 14% forcing the authorities to meet the bulk 86% of the power requirement through oil and coal. Therefore the time has come to focus our attention on renewable energy sources in order to meet the growing power demand, he said. The focus of world leaders at the recently concluded Rio +20 conference was also on renewable energy sources. Hence it was decided to focus the world’s attention on renewable energy sources from 2015 to 2030. Minister Ranawaka stated that while the world focuses their attention on Solar, wind and bio fuel for environmentally friendly power generation, Sri Lanka too need to focus on such renewable energy sources. However he said that there are two main obstacles in the renewable energy power generation. The main problem is the inability to generate power at the required time. The next issue is that even id power could be generated while there is sunlight and wind power, there numerous technical difficulties in the storage capacity of the power generated. However if we are to address these issues ion a proper manner we need to set up green international banks.
